Should You Upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro? A Dad’s Honest Math

The iPhone 18 Pro costs $100 more than last year. Here is the simple math on who should upgrade now, who should wait for spring, and who should…

Every September, plenty of people ask the same question: “Should I upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro, or is that dumb?” This year the answer is a little more interesting than usual, because Apple changed two things at once. The price went up, and the cheaper iPhone 18 is not coming until spring.

So here is the math worth running, the same way you would for a car or a grill. Not the spec sheet. The question of whether this particular purchase makes your life better by enough to justify the money.

What changed this year

The short version, straight from Apple’s announcement:

Starting price$1,199 (256GB)$1,299 (256GB)
Change from last yearup $100up $100

What you get for that money:

  • A new chip. The A20 Pro is built on a 2 nanometer process. Faster, cooler, and better on battery. You will not notice the speed opening email. You might notice it two years from now, when your current phone would have started to feel slow.
  • A variable aperture camera. The main camera can now open to f/1.48 for low light and close down to f/4. In plain terms, better indoor photos without the phone guessing. Macworld’s hands-on puts the low light gain around 50 percent.
  • More battery. Apple rates the Pro Max at up to 45 hours of video playback, six more than last year. The regular Pro gains a few hours too.
  • Faster charging. Roughly 50 percent in 15 minutes with a wired charger.

What did not change: screen sizes, and the basic shape of the thing. If you are hoping for a phone that feels different in your hand, this is not it.

The part nobody puts in the headline

The regular iPhone 18 is not here. Apple split the launch. The iPhone 18, the budget 18e and the second iPhone Air are expected in spring 2027. Apple also announced a foldable, the iPhone Duo, which is reportedly around $2,000 and is a very different conversation.

That matters because for years the smart move for most people was “skip the Pro, buy the regular one, keep the difference.” That option does not exist until spring. If you want a new iPhone this fall, the entry price is $1,199. That single fact changes the answer to “should I upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro” for a lot of people.

So, should I upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro? Three questions

1. How old is your phone?

This is most of the answer.

  • iPhone 16 Pro or 17 Pro: Keep it. The new phone is better, not different. You would be paying roughly $1,200 minus a trade in for a camera bump and a few hours of battery.
  • iPhone 14 or 15 era: Borderline. If it still holds a charge and the camera does what you need, wait for spring and see what the regular iPhone 18 costs.
  • iPhone 13 or older: This is where the case gets real. Four years is about when batteries fade, software starts to lag, and trade in values stop mattering much anyway.

2. What is actually wrong with the phone you have?

Be honest here. “It is slow” often means the storage is full. “It dies by 3pm” often means the battery is worn out, and that is a fixable problem. Go to Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. If it reads below about 80 percent and the phone is otherwise fine, a battery replacement costs a fraction of a new phone and buys you another year or two.

If the answer is “the camera cannot handle a dim gym,” that is a legitimate reason. Indoor youth sports, school concerts and birthday parties with the lights off for the cake are exactly where the new low light camera earns its keep. That is the one upgrade here I would pay for.

3. Where does your old phone go?

This is the dad move that changes the math. In a lot of houses the old phone does not get traded in. It gets handed down to a kid. If that is the plan, the trade in credit you are giving up is real money, and it is worth thinking about whether the kid is ready for it. Setting it up with screen time rules that actually work before it changes hands saves an argument later.

If it is not going to a kid, check Apple’s trade in values before you decide. They move, and a phone that is worth $300 now may be worth $150 in the spring.

The honest bottom line

Here is how I would call it:

  • Upgrade now if your phone is four or more years old, the battery is gone, and you take a lot of indoor photos of your kids.
  • Wait for spring if you do not need a Pro phone and your current one is getting by. The regular iPhone 18 should cost a lot less.
  • Skip it if you bought a Pro in the last two years. Nothing here is worth $1,200 to you.

The phone is good. It is also $100 more than it was last year, in a year where there is no cheaper new option until spring. That does not make it a bad buy. It makes it a buy you should make on purpose.

Keep a running list of what you spent on and what you skipped for exactly this reason. Nearly every regret on a list like that is an upgrade bought because it was new, not because something was wrong with the old one.

So, should I upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro? If you had to ask, check your battery health first. It is free, it takes thirty seconds, and it answers the question more often than you would think.

Common questions

How much is the iPhone 18 Pro?

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, both with 256GB. That is $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max launched at.

When is the regular iPhone 18 coming out?

Apple split the lineup this year. The iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 are expected in spring 2027. Only the Pro models and the foldable launched in the fall.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth it over the iPhone 17 Pro?

For most people, no. The upgrades are real (a faster 2nm chip, a variable aperture camera, longer battery life) but a two year old Pro phone still does everything a parent needs. The case gets strong at four years or older.

Should I upgrade if my battery is dying?

Check battery health in Settings first. If the phone is otherwise fine, a battery replacement from Apple costs a fraction of a new phone and buys another year or two.
