Where to Travel in October With Kids

Fall color, Halloween events and warm water, with 2026 dates and crowd warnings. Where to take the kids in October, plus the math on missing school.

It is September 30 as we write this, which means September is nearly gone. Here is the good news: October is a better month to travel anyway, if you pick the right place, and you still have time to book it.

October is the month when the whole country puts on a show. The mountains turn red and orange, every town builds something out of pumpkins, and the desert finally cools off. It is also the month with the most ways to get it wrong, because of school breaks, hurricanes and one very crowded week in the middle.

So here is where we would go, what to expect for October 2026 specifically, and the honest math on taking the kids out of school.

First, the one week that changes everything

Look at the calendar before you look at flights. Columbus Day, now called Indigenous Peoples’ Day in a lot of places, lands on Monday, October 12. Plenty of schools build a fall break around it, and the weekend of October 10 to 12 is when family travel spikes.

If your kids are off that week, you will pay for it and you will stand in lines. If you can move your trip a week earlier or later, do. Halloween is on a Saturday this year, which is a gift for anyone who wants a late October trip without missing any school at all.

Fall foliage, and the timing that matters

Leaves do not care about your calendar. Peak color moves across the country like a slow wave, and if you book the wrong week you get a lot of green trees and a lot of disappointment.

Here is what the forecasts say for 2026. According to Afar’s peak foliage prediction map, most of New England is expected to peak around October 6, New York’s Hudson Valley and Catskills around the week of October 13, and the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina the weeks of October 13 and 20. The Old Farmer’s Almanac expects near average color in most regions this year, and says timing can shift by several days depending on rain and early frost.

Two practical takeaways. First, if you are reading this on October 6 and want New England, you are already at the tail end of your window. Second, the South is where you go if you are booking now, because the color arrives later and stays longer.

The Smokies and the Blue Ridge

This is our pick for most families booking on short notice. Color starts at the higher elevations in early October and works its way down the mountains through the end of the month and into early November, so you have a real window of several weeks instead of a single weekend. That is forgiving when you are planning on a deadline.

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in the weeks of October 13 and 20 and you get the best odds. Book a cabin, bring a card game, and let the kids run around outside until dark. A mountain cabin trip with kids (and a dog, if you have one) works the same in fall as in any other season, just with better scenery.

One warning: fall weekends in mountain towns are packed. Cabins and roads fill up. A Tuesday through Thursday stay is cheaper, quieter and easier on everyone’s patience.

The Hudson Valley

If you would rather have New York than Tennessee, this is the one. Peak is expected the week of October 13, which puts it right on top of the Columbus Day crowd, so aim for a weekday or the week after.

The reason we like it for kids is the pumpkins. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson runs September 18 through November 8 this year, with tickets starting at $24 on select evenings. Time Out reports the longest trail in the event’s history, plus new sections like a movie monsters forest and a children’s story lane. Note that $24 is the starting price, so expect to pay more on weekends and busy nights, and buy tickets ahead of time.

Halloween trips that are actually fun for kids

To be honest, we are fans of Halloween done right and critics of Halloween done crowded. Here are the two we would consider.

Salem, Massachusetts

Salem runs its Haunted Happenings festival all month, October 1 to 31, per the official 2026 press release. Family friendly picks include the free Howl-o-ween Pet Parade on October 10, the Salem Night Faire on select weekend evenings in mid to late October, and the Halloween night celebration with a 400 drone show over the North River at 10 p.m. for the city’s 400th anniversary.

The city itself tells you to skip driving and take trains, ferries or satellite parking with shuttles, and to reserve attractions ahead, especially on weekends. We would listen. Our advice: go on a weekday in the middle of the month and avoid Halloween night with small kids unless you love shoulder to shoulder crowds.

Disney World

Disney is an October classic, and the timing matters more than at any other destination on this list. According to Disney Tourist Blog’s October crowd calendar, the calmer windows are October 1 to 4 and October 18 to 29. October 9 to 17 is expected to run 7 out of 10 to 10 out of 10 for crowds, because of fall breaks and Columbus Day.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party runs select nights through October 31, from 7 p.m. to midnight, with tickets from $119 to $229 depending on the date. That is a separate ticket on top of your park admission, and Magic Kingdom closes early to regular guests on party nights. So think about whether your kids actually want the trick-or-treating, or whether that money is better spent on a second day of rides.

Weather-wise, highs are still in the 80s, the evenings cool to about 60, and afternoon storms are possible at the tail end of hurricane season. Which brings us to the part nobody puts in the brochure.

The hurricane conversation

October is still hurricane season. We love a good warm beach, and in Miami, where Pops grew up, hurricane season is part of life, so we do not say this to scare you. According to Fox Weather, October is the third most active month for Atlantic tropical activity, typically producing about two named storms and one hurricane. The activity shifts toward the western Caribbean and the Gulf, and South Florida has had more October hurricanes than any other month.

That does not mean you cannot go to Florida or the Caribbean in October. It means you should treat it as a calculated risk:

  • Book refundable or flexible rates where you can
  • Buy travel insurance before a storm has a name, because policies generally exclude storms that are already named
  • Check the forecast every day in the week before you leave
  • Have a backup plan that does not require a beach

If you are set on the Caribbean, we would go with the flexible option or pick somewhere else this month. And if the flight and the forecast do not agree, drive. Our guide to the best family road trips in the United States has routes that hold up with kids in the back seat.

Places that are better in October than any other time

Utah and the desert Southwest

Zion is a good example of the month doing its job. According to Zion Outfitter, October highs sit around 66 degrees with lows near 39, with fall color in the canyon and cooler mornings, and visitation is still high but starting to thin out from summer. The Virgin River is 50 to 55 degrees, so the Narrows hike is cold and best for older kids with the right gear.

The point is that the desert in July is a punishment and the desert in October is a reward. Pack layers, because a 27 degree swing between the day and the night is normal, and start hikes early anyway.

Hawaii

Warm water is still the reason to go. According to Hawaii Guide, September and October have the warmest ocean temperatures of the year, daytime highs are in the mid 80s, and tourist numbers drop after summer, which makes luaus, tours and restaurants easier to book. Late in the month, big swells can start arriving on Oahu’s North Shore, so keep the little ones off the north side beaches.

Two notes: the IRONMAN World Championship on October 10 fills up Kona on the Big Island, so book that side early or pick another island. And while Hawaii sits in Pacific hurricane season, direct hits are rare, which is a much calmer risk than Florida.

The flight is the expensive part of Hawaii, and we would not pretend otherwise. Price the flight first and let it decide whether this is the year.

The honest math on missing school in October

October is a different animal than September when it comes to school. In September, coursework is still ramping up. By October, the first units are wrapping up, and the first real tests and projects show up. Pulling a kid out now costs more than it did three weeks ago.

What makes it easier: the calendar is on your side this year. Halloween is a Saturday. Columbus Day is a Monday. That gives you a natural three day weekend on October 10 to 12 with zero absences, and anywhere your school gives a fall break, you already have the days.

What makes it harder: the middle of the month is when everyone else is traveling, which is exactly when trips cost the most. If you take days out of school to avoid the crowd, make sure you actually avoid it. If you take the days and still stand in the same line, you paid twice.

What works: talk to the teacher before you book, ask for the work in advance, and check the attendance policy in writing. Elementary school is generally the most flexible. High school is a real conversation, and sometimes the answer is no.

Our take: Trading two or three days of school once is worth it for a trip the kids will remember for twenty years. Doing it every year for a trip nobody remembers is not. If a long weekend gets you the trip, take the long weekend and keep the attendance record clean.

How to book it

Pick the week first, then the place. October is the most date sensitive month of the year. The week of October 13 is peak color in the Northeast and North Carolina and also peak crowd week. Either accept that, or move a week.

Go midweek. Tuesday through Thursday nights are cheaper and quieter almost everywhere on this list, because the weekends are where the leaf peepers and long weekend crowds pile in.

Buy tickets ahead for anything with a timed entry. The Jack O’Lantern Blaze, Salem tours and the Disney Halloween party all sell by date. Do not count on the door.

Look one tier down from the famous place. The town next to the town everyone books, the second best trail. In October the difference in scenery is small and the difference in price and parking is not.

Have a plan B for weather. Foliage, hurricanes and desert cold snaps are all real. A flexible booking is worth more than a slightly better rate.

So where would we go this year? If we were booking today for the two weeks that are left to plan, we would take the family to the Blue Ridge Parkway on a weekday in the week of October 20, with a cabin, a pile of blankets and no agenda. It is cheaper than Disney, less risky than Florida, and the color is right on schedule.

Where are you taking your family this month? Tell us what you booked, and whether you would do it again.

Common questions

Is October a good time to travel with kids?

Yes, if you pick the right place. October has fall color in the mountains and Northeast, Halloween events built for families, mild weather in the desert Southwest, and warm water in Hawaii. The catch is the week around Columbus Day (October 12 this year), when many school fall breaks overlap and popular places like Disney World get very crowded.

Where is the best place to see fall colors in October 2026?

It depends on the week. New England is forecast to peak around October 6, the Hudson Valley and Catskills around the week of October 13, and the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina the weeks of October 13 and 20. Higher elevations in the Great Smokies turn first and lower elevations turn later in the month.

Is Disney World crowded in October?

It depends on the dates. Crowd forecasts show October 1 to 4 and October 18 to 29 as the calmer windows, with the worst crowds from about October 9 to 17 when fall breaks and Columbus Day overlap. Highs are still in the 80s and afternoon storms are possible.

Is it safe to travel to Florida or the Caribbean in October?

It is possible, but it is still hurricane season. October is typically the third most active month for Atlantic tropical storms, and South Florida has had more October hurricanes than any other month. If you go, book flexible or refundable options and buy travel insurance before a storm is named, since coverage usually excludes storms that already have a name.
